The Ultimate Guide to Storing Logs for Your Woodburner — Mr Logs Explains
You’ve invested in good quality firewood — now you need to store it properly to keep it dry, efficient, and ready to burn. At Mr Logs, we often say:
“Good firewood deserves good storage.”
Whether you’ve bought seasoned logs or kiln dried logs, proper storage is essential to maintain their quality and give you the best possible burn.
Why Proper Log Storage Matters
Even if you buy fully dried, ready-to-burn logs, they can still absorb moisture from rain, damp ground, or poor airflow. When firewood becomes damp:
-
It’s harder to light
-
Burns inefficiently
-
Produces more smoke and soot
-
Gives off less heat
-
Can damage your stove and chimney
With a little care, you can protect your logs and get maximum heat from every piece of wood.
Mr Logs’ Golden Rules for Storing Firewood
1️⃣ Keep Logs Off the Ground
Damp rises — if your logs are sitting directly on soil, grass, or concrete, moisture can easily seep up into the bottom layers.
✅ Use a pallet, log store base, or bricks to keep logs raised and dry.
2️⃣ Provide Good Airflow
Logs need air circulation to stay dry.
✅ Stack logs loosely to allow air to move between them.
✅ Avoid wrapping logs in plastic, which traps moisture.
✅ Open-sided log stores with slatted walls are ideal.
3️⃣ Cover the Top, Leave the Sides Open
You want to protect your logs from rain and snow, but still allow airflow.
✅ Use a solid roof, tarp, or waterproof cover — but leave the sides open.
✅ Avoid fully enclosing the stack, which can cause damp and mould.
4️⃣ Choose the Right Location
Where you store your logs makes a big difference:
✅ Pick a spot sheltered from driving rain and harsh winds.
✅ If possible, store them close to your house for easy access — but leave enough space for airflow.
✅ Avoid shady, damp corners of the garden.
5️⃣ Store the Right Amount Indoors
You can keep a small basket of logs indoors near your stove for convenience, but avoid storing large amounts inside — especially if the logs aren’t fully dry.
✅ Only bring in what you’ll use in a day or two.
What About Kiln Dried vs Seasoned Logs?
Both kiln dried and properly seasoned logs from Mr Logs are ready to burn straight away — but they still need to be protected from reabsorbing moisture once delivered.
-
Kiln dried logs are extremely dry (often below 15% moisture). They’re more sensitive to reabsorbing moisture if left unprotected outdoors.
-
Seasoned logs are usually around 15–20% moisture, and also need good storage to maintain their dryness.
Mr Logs Tip: Build or Buy a Log Store
Investing in a proper log store can make life much easier.
✅ Sturdy frame
✅ Roof for rain protection
✅ Raised off the ground
✅ Open sides for airflow
You can buy ready-made log stores or build your own with simple materials. We’re happy to advise!
In Summary: Dry Logs Burn Better
-
Always store logs off the ground
-
Protect from rain but allow airflow
-
Keep a small indoor supply topped up
