Suitable for many landscaping projects and double screened down to 10mm.

Topsoil is a nutrient-rich layer of soil, ideal for turfing, planting, and filling and levelling raised beds. It provides a strong foundation for healthy roots and lush, long-lasting growth. This is some of the best topsoil you will buy in the local area. Lots of professional gardeners use this product and say you won't find any better. Stored indoors and will be delivered dry.

Topsoil vs. Compost: Which do you need?

To ensure you get the right product for your garden project, it is helpful to understand the difference between topsoil and compost:

  • Topsoil is for Building and Filling: Topsoil provides essential structure and volume. Because it contains natural mineral components (like sand, silt, and clay) that do not decompose, it is the perfect bulk base layer for filling new raised beds, levelling uneven ground, or preparing an area before laying turf. Minerals do not get eaten by soil microbes or gas off into the air. If you put 10 inches of topsoil into a bed, you will still have roughly 10 inches years later, keeping your levels consistent.
  • Compost is for Improving and Enriching: Compost is an active soil amendment packed with organic matter. If your goal is to boost nutrients, increase microbial life, or break up heavy, existing soil in your current garden beds, our compost is exactly what you need. However, because compost is 100% organic matter, it will naturally break down and shrink. As soil microbes and earthworms eat the compost to release nutrients, much of it is converted into carbon dioxide and water. It also compacts heavily when watered or rained on. If you use pure compost to fill a deep raised bed, it is very common to see the soil level drop by 40% to 50% over a year or two, leaving you with a sunken bed that needs topping up.

Important Information for Your Project

To help you get the best results, please keep the following in mind:

  • Weed Expectations: Unlike compost, topsoil production does not involve a high-temperature stage to kill off dormant seeds. While this is standard for all topsoil purchased from any supplier, we want to ensure your expectations are set correctly. You may need to treat the topsoil for weeds yourself once it has been laid.
  • Composition and Planting Advice: Topsoil naturally contains a certain amount of clay, which helps it retain structure but can cause it to dry out and harden in warm weather. If you are planting anything other than grass—particularly for germinating seeds—we highly recommend using our 50/50 blend of topsoil and compost, or straight compost, to ensure the best growing conditions.
